所有殘疾人奧運會比賽必須在符合國際游泳聯會(FINA)規格的泳池中進行。泳手因應殘疾程度，在每次比賽只可選擇於跳台或在水中以一手觸池壁出發。全失明運動員在比賽中接近池壁時(準備轉身或衝终點)，可由引導員利用提示棒(竹竿一端綁上海綿)輕輕敲擊運動員背部提示。比賽按分級設有男、女子各泳式單項賽事、接力賽和混合泳。比賽項目距離最長為400米，最短為50米。
Para swimming competitions shall be held in pools meeting the standards set by FINA. Athletes can either start their race on the starting platform or in the water with one hand touching the pool wall according to their degree of impairment. Visually impaired athletes are required to have an assistant to help him/her as he or she approaches the swimming pool end wall (either to make a turn or for the finish of the race) by touching the back of the athlete with a tapper. Events of different swimming styles are competed by gender and organized in the terms of individual, relay and medley. The shortest competition distance is 50m and the longest is 400m.
級別鑑定 Classification
殘疾人游泳項目的分級主要為視障、肢體殘疾及智障三類。視障運動員以視力喪失程度分為11、12和13級。智障運動員為14級。肢體殘疾運動員以綜合功能分級，分為S1-S10級(自由泳、背泳、蝶泳)；SB1-SB9級(蛙泳)；SM1-SM10級(混合泳)。數目越大表示殘疾程度越低。
Para swimming is categorized into three main groups with physical, visual and intellectual impairment. Visually impaired athletes are classified into S11, S12 and S13 according to their degree of vision loss. Intellectually impaired athletes are classified under S14. Physically impaired athletes are classified into S1-S10 in Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly Stroke, SB1-SB9 in Breaststroke and SM1-SM10 for Individual Medley. A higher class number indicates a lower level of impairment.
